Parish Finances

Sincere thanks to those who have sent in half-yearly contributions to our Planned Giving Campaign recently. The continued generosity and support of all is very much appreciated. During June we paid our local contribution to the school at £10 per pupil which amounted to £3,900. This has been rising in recent years and will continue to do so with the increase in pupils. Regarding the proposed extension to the school - plans for a four classroom and other facilities extension have been drawn up. They are now with the Department of Education and await go ahead for Planning Permission and then going out to Tender. We hope this will all proceed as quickly as possible. When the extension goes ahead we will have to meet 15% of the costs from Parish Finances. Meanwhile as our numbers have increased so much for this September we have been given sanction for the appointment of a further teacher in the school. This creates a difficulty regarding accommodation. It is proposed to rent a Portakabin Classroom for the interim period as we await the extension.

Our Financial Year ended on 30th June and a detailed account will be issued after our Audit. On 1st July our current account had a Credit Balance of £1,818.39 and our Deposit Account had a Credit Balance of £1,156.17 giving a Total Credit of £2,974.56. Work to be carried out on the Church include the interior of the gable wall, the Sacristy heating, the flat roofs and the Car Park. Estimates for the Car Park average £6,000. This of course does not include the costs of a wall or barrier which may now be necessary.

What is asked is Equal Generosity not Equal Giving. If you are not already contributing and are willing to do so, please leave your name and address at the Sacristy. Once again renewed thanks for your generosity and support.

Blessing of Graves

The Blessing of Graves in the Parish Cemeteries will be as follows: Sunday, 26th July Barraniskey, Sunday 2nd August Castlemacadam and Sunday 9th August Ballycoog.

Battle of Arklow - 9th June 1798

Did you know that more people died in the 1798 Revolution than in the six year French Revolution? Arklow was the scene of some losses.

The Rebel Forces made up from the combined Wicklow and Wexford forces led by the Ballyman Division under Billy Byrne of Ballymanus, Anthony Perry of Inch, Wexford, Edward Fitzgerald of Newpark, Wexford and Fr.Michael Murphy of Ballycanew. The Government Forces consisted of 1,360 Infantry, 125 Cavalry, six Yeomanry Corps under Major General Francis Needham, Durham Fencibles under Colonel Skerret, Cavan Militia.

The Battle took place as the Rebels advanced on Arklow in two columns. Rebel Pike charges on emplacements received stiff opposition from battalion guns and infantry. The Rebel attack faltered due to lack of ammunition. The second column stood ground against the cavalry, but failed to break the town's defences. The Rebels withdrew to Gorey Hill.

Heavy casualties followed the pike charges. Fr.Michael Murphy was killed. Rebel prisoners were hanged in the Protestant Churchyard. On the Government side, many Durham Fencibles were killed during the pike charge and one Government cannon was destroyed.

To a Future Sports Star

This weekend as the World Cup closes, Brazil and France are saluting and urging on their football stars. As they do so, we in Templerainey also salute and encourage one of our own who has begun his career as a footballer. Congratulations and Best Wishes for the future to 15 year old Mervyn Travers of Highfield who last weekend began a three year Football Scholarship with Leeds United Football Club. Congratulations also to his parents and family who have supported him in pursuing this career. We will all be watching for your goal saving Mervyn and look forward to seeing you achieve "your goal" and some day playing for your country. I expect Leeds United will now have a few new fans!.
