JACK AND THE BEANSTALK

a report by Anne Wagner

From the time I read the Wicklow Poeple assuring us "Yes" there was going to be a third panto production by Templerainey Youth Fun "Jack and the Beanstalk", I couldn't wait to see how the producer could manage a real live giant and a beanstalk. On reading the programmer, my heart sank when I read 'Giant' with a question mark. Was there going to be no Giant after all?

I listened with delight as the narrator described Jack the Penniless whose father had escaped to the Cayman Islands where hundreds of brown envelopes lie hidden. As for the 'Celtic Tiger' he had definitely rushed past the door of poor Jack and his dear mother. Worse still Jack's friends were into drugs, shoplifting, anything but an honest living. It seemed that the aim of the Producer was to provide a platform for all the cast to display their God-given talents in all forms of artistic expression, and didn't they do just that?

From the moment the curtain went up, Helena Culleton as Jack's mother, portrayed all the hallmarks of the poor worried mother of a teenage laidback, workshy son. Her costume from her hair-do colouring and exquisite old fashioned bonnet, right down to the dress and shoes made you realise 'Yes' this was another Templerainey Youth Fun show of exciting talent. Lazy laidback Hak came on with all his usual excuses. As many will understand Jack's part was a difficult one to play, unless you relieve the part it won't work. Michael McGovern did live the part to perfection and with his laidback easy style approach even with his good/bad friends was a delight to watch.

Ireland as we know and love is never short of a Leprechaun story. Well, for me, Shane Culleton would have been the perfect logo for the Irish Tourist Board. His costume, the way he stood and walked on stage was straight out of Tir na nOg. Long live the Fiary godfather of Ireland! Spare a thought for the gorgeous lovable 'Dairygold'. The effort that went into creating her was magic. The expression on her face "Sure I'm doing my best" and the ever cautious farmer Mark Armstrong added to the scene.

How do you get boys and girls of this age group to knuckle down and learn script lines as well as turn up for practice? Well the producer must have some form of magic potion because he got the very best out of John Harmon, Neil Burke, Olga Tyrrell, Kate Whelan and Lorraine Brennan as they showed us the good and bad sides of real friends. Was there a Giant? 'Oh yes there was!' Before he made his stage entry, you could hear his stamping feet and depp angry voice shouting "I smell the blood of a Wicklow man". Then came the best kept secret of this Millennium - Niall Fitzmaurice marched on to the stage, complete with an enormous cap, beard and giant like trouser outfit. The perfect image of a mini giant! The audience erupted into applause and laughter, but Niall stood his ground - not a flicker of an eyelid or fear of any description did he show as he climbed up to his breakfast to eat his porridge. For one so young, he played his part like a professional as he nodded off to sleep counting his gold pieces which Jack saw as he hid in the wings and taking full advantage grabbed the gold. There were always surprises in Pantomimes, surely the Giant of Templerainey on a scale of 10 must get 11+

Ryan Lee as the Pest Control Man looking for Arklow Courthouse, and Eoin Lee as the little mouse were brilliant. Claire De Courcy gave a splendid redering as the Traffic Warden reminding us of what happens should you forget about the yellow lines. The dancers Sinead Kelly, Martina Lynch, Claire De Courcy, Fiona O'Sullivan, Aoife Byrne and Ciara Hurley had us all tapping our feet and clapping our hands as they brought back memories of the Abba era. A special mention for Martina Lynch who not only danced, but seemed to enjoy every step of the way.

Everyone who has seen the show must wonder how the Producer, Cast and all connected with the production continue this ever improving high performance acclaim. The final curtain came triumphantly down on a bright and imaginative show. Another Panto, a New Millennium, the talent and commitment of the Producer and Cast just goes on and on and on ....
